Amnesty International Statement for the Record for Feb. 15 Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission Hearing on Northern Ireland

On February 14, 2022, Amnesty International USA and UK submitted a statement for the record ahead of a February 15 Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission hearing on "Northern Ireland: Accountability at Risk." The statement expresses concern regarding the UK government's plans to deal with the legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict. The proposals amount to a de facto amnesty for security forces of the United Kingdom and other perpetrators of human rights violations and will close all paths to justice for victims. Amnesty International USA Statement for the Record for February 9th hearing on “‘Targeted Killing’ and the Rule of Law: The Legal and Human Costs of 20 Years of U.S. Drone Strikes”

On behalf of Amnesty International USA and our members and supporters in the United States, we hereby submit this statement for the record to address our concerns that the United States has at times failed to abide by international humanitarian law and international human rights law in its use of air strikes that have harmed large numbers of civilians over the past 20 years.

Amnesty International released a Feb. 1 report documenting the Israeli government’s ongoing human rights abuses against Palestinians. The core finding of this years-long research is that the Israeli authorities are committing the crime against humanity of apartheid, both in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (“OPT”) and in Israel, and against Palestinian refugees in other countries.

Yemen: US-made weapon used in air strike that killed scores in escalation of Saudi-led coalition attacks

The Saudi-led coalition used a precision-guided munition made in the United States in last week’s air strike on a detention center in Sa’adah, north-western Yemen, which, according to Doctors without Borders, killed at least 80 people and injured over 200, Amnesty International said today. The laser-guided bomb used in the attack, manufactured by U.S. defense company Raytheon, is the latest piece in a wider web of evidence of the use of U.S.-manufactured weapons in incidents that could amount to war crimes. UK: Ambassador Reeker must publicly oppose the UK government’s Northern Ireland legacy proposals

On December 23, 2021, Amnesty International USA and Amnesty International UK wrote to Ambassador Philip T. Reeker to urge him to publicly oppose the UK government’s plans to deal with the legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict. Residential building destroyed by an airstrike by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition on 25 August in Faj Attan, Sana’a, killing 16 civilians and injuring 17 more. This photo was taken on 25 August. On 25 August, an air strike by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition hit a cluster of houses in Sana’a, severely damaging three of them, and killing seven children including all five of Buthaina’s brothers and sisters. The bomb that destroyed a residential building in Yemen's capital last month, killing 16 civilians and injuring 17 more - including five-year-old Buthaina who lost her entire family in the attack - was made in the USA.

Joint Letter: Congress Must Block Biden Administration’s Wrongful $650 Million Arms Sale to Saudi Arabia or Risk Fueling Further U.S. Complicity in Rights Violations and Yemeni Civilian Suffering
