The following is a statement from Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA, responding to the decision by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy to grant the Trump administration’s request to temporarily reinstate a portion of the ban on refugees

Amnesty International USA activists speak out against a ban and a wall against people
AIUSA Executive Director Margaret and AI Secretary General Salil Shetty delivered a letter to the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, outlining numerous personal stories of people who are affected by the Muslim ban, asking DHS to release full information about how the ban has been implemented, and demanding that DHS help roll back the ban. As a part of the protests outside, we projected “No Ban, No Wall” on the building along with photos of refugees in Lebanon and Kenya provided by Magnum Photography.

Family Fleeing Violence Ordered Released from Berks Immigration Center

Eight-year old Antonio* was ordered released with his mother from Berks County Residential Center in Pennsylvania today after being granted bond by an immigration judge. He and his 24-year-old mother Marlene fled kidnapping threats and severe physical and sexual assault before arriving in the U.S. seeking asylum. They have been held at Berks for over 23 months.

Trump Administration Attempts to Put Mother and Child Released from Immigration Detention Back in Custody

After over 600 days in immigration detention, Wendy and her three-year-old son Diego were granted bond and released by an immigration judge earlier this week. But the Trump administration has appealed to put them back behind bars, despite the fact that the mother and son have already traveled to Houston to be with family while their asylum claim is pending.

Amnesty International USA: Child Held at Berks Immigration Center Ordered Released

In an extraordinary move, three-year old Josué* was ordered released from Berks County Residential Center in Pennsylvania today after being granted release by an immigration judge. He and his 28-year-old mother Teresa fled kidnapping threats and physical and sexual assault in Honduras before arriving in the US seeking asylum. They have been imprisoned at Berks for over 16 months. Josué has spent over half his life in detention, learning to walk and talk in confinement.
