This action has no end date.

#MeToo activist, Sophia Huang Xueqin, and labor activist, Wang Jianbing, were arrested on September 19, 2021. On June 14, 2024, Huang was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment, and Wang to 3 years and 6 months, both for “inciting subversion of state power”; the evidence used by the prosecution included allegations that the two had organized weekly private gatherings with activists to discuss civil society challenges in China and received and organized training in “non-violent movements”. Wang and Huang have formally filed appeals. Recently, Amnesty learned that they are both facing health concerns but have not been allowed appropriate access to medical care. They should be released immediately and unconditionally.

sample letter:

Dear Director Zhang Rui, / Chief Procurator Zhang Jian,

I am writing to express my concern for #MeToo activist, Huang Xueqin (黄雪琴), and labor activist, Wang Jiangbing (王建兵). On June 14, 2024, Huang was sentenced to five years and Wang to three years and six months, for “inciting subversion of state power” (煽动颠覆国家政权).

Furthermore, I am concerned about their health. Wang has serious heart and gastrointestinal problems and has been unable to receive timely and appropriate treatment. Huang was also reported to be suffering from prolonged amenorrhea and sudden weight loss, among other health problems.

Therefore, I urge you to release Sophia Huang Xueqin and Wang Jianbing immediately and unconditionally as they have been convicted only for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and association. Pending their release, ensure that they have prompt access to adequate medical care, and that they are not subjected to torture or other forms of ill-treatment.

Yours sincerely,

[YOUR NAME]
