Saudi Arabia: Juvenile offender’s death sentence must shame the authorities into meaningful action

The organization called on the authorities to quash Ali al-Nimr’s death sentence, which followed a grossly unfair trial and was based on “confessions” Ali al-Nimr says were extracted under torture. It also urged the authorities to immediately impose an official moratorium on all executions and implement significant reforms in the country’s criminal justice system.

Texas Appeals Court Grants Stay of Execution for Nicaraguan Citizen

A Texas court has granted a stay of execution for a Nicaraguan citizen who was scheduled to be put to death tomorrow. Bernardo Abán Tercero was sentenced in 2000. At his trial, his lawyers presented no expert testimony – such as from a mental health expert – and possible mitigation was not adequately investigated. Today the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted a writ of habeas corpus in his case and remanded it to the trial court.

Iran: Halt execution of Kurdish man due to be carried out tomorrow morning

Behrouz Alkhani, a 30-year-old man from Iran’s Kurdish minority has been transferred out of Oroumieh prison’s general ward and placed in solitary confinement in preparation for his execution tomorrow, despite the fact that he’s still awaiting the outcome of a Supreme Court appeal.
