Urging End to Shameful U.N. Security Council Silence on Syria, Amnesty International on Nov. 30 To Set Up Memorial Outside U.N. Headquarters to Thousands of Dead in Syrian Uprising

On Wednesday, November 30 outside United Nations headquarters, Amnesty International activists will urge the Security Council to end its shameful silence about the bloodshed in Syria and act to prevent more people from dying. The organization will set up a "memorial banner" onto which activists will place the individual names of some of the more than 3,000 people who have died in the Syrian uprising.

Arab League vote to suspend Syria puts pressure on Security Council to act, says Amnesty International

The Arab League's decision to suspend Syria must spur the UN Security Council into action, Amnesty International said today. At an emergency meeting in Cairo today, 18 out of 22 member states voted in favour of suspending Syria's membership of the regional organization with effect from Wednesday if the government continued to breach the terms of the Arab League's action plan.

Climate of fear in Syria’s hospitals as patients and medics targeted

The Syrian authorities have been blocking and manipulating access to health care for people wounded during the unrest that has swept across the country since mid-March 2011, putting many lives at risk. They have routinely deemed those wounded by firearms as opponents of the government and treated them as detainees and held them incommunicado. The patterns of abuse recorded in this report show how the authorities are preventing health care professionals from treating those wounded freely and without fear. Such actions flagrantly violate Syria's obligations under international human rights law.

Amnesty International Reveals Shocking New Evidence of Extreme Brutality in Syria — Mutilated Body of Abducted 18-Year-Old Woman Killed in Horrific Circumstances

Amnesty International today revealed new evidence of the extreme brutality being meted out to Syrian protesters and their families. The organization said the mutilated body of an 18-year-old woman who was abducted by security forces was discovered by her family in a morgue in Homs Sept. 13. Zainab al-Hosni would become the first woman known to have died in custody during the unrest.
