The Day of the Disappeared: Enforced disappearances persist globally

Congressional letter urges State Department to address human rights in Mexico
Amnesty International supported a letter that Congressman Alan Lowenthal, along with 68 of his House of Representatives colleagues, sent to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry urging the State Department to address serious human rights abuses in Mexico. The letter also highlighted an Amnesty International report of 100 women arrested in Mexico who were tortured by security forces. The full letter can be found here.

Human Rights Groups Call on U.S. to Withhold Aid to Mexican Military
Ahead of the Mexican president’s visit to the U.S., Amnesty International joined with six other human rights groups to call on the U.S. government to once again withhold aid to Mexico’s security forces. The groups submitted a joint memorandum to the State Department and U.S. Congress concerning the Mexican government’s failure to meet human rights requirements set out in the Merida Initiative.

Three Amigos Summit: Human rights must be at the core of the North American agenda
Human rights must be a top priority during the North American Leaders’ Summit in Ottawa, said Amnesty International in an open letter to United States President Barack Obama, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The letter was shared with the leaders in advance of the June 29 summit, providing recommendations on the protection of human rights related to migrants and refugees, trade and investment, Indigenous peoples, women and girls, national and public security, climate change, and human rights defenders.
