USA: Turning a Page, but Torture Chapter is Far From Closed

We have said it before. We will say it again. What do we know about the secret detention program operated by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) under authority granted by President George W. Bush on 17 September 2001? We know that detainees in secret CIA custody were tortured. Torture is a crime under international law. We know that detainees were subjected to enforced disappearance, also a crime under international law. We know that no one has been prosecuted for authorizing or committing these crimes.

Letter to Secretary John Kerry on 43 Missing Students in Mexico

In a letter sent to Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday, a group of 14 Senators including Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-NJ), wrote to express their deep concern for the lives of the 43 young students that forcibly disappeared on September 26th in the State of Guerrero, Mexico. The Senators call for additional attention on “strengthening the investigative and forensic capacity of Mexican law enforcement and its ability to serve victims of crime, violence, and human rights abuses.”

The international community’s failure to deal with the growing number of Syrian refugees fleeing into Turkey has led to a crisis of unprecedented proportions with refugees facing push-backs and live fire at the border and hundreds of thousands living in destitution. "Struggling to Survive: Refugees from Syria in Turkey," documents serious human rights risks faced by the 1.6 million people who have sought refuge in the country over the last three and a half years. It also highlights the deplorable reluctance of the international community to take meaningful financial responsibility for the refugee crisis.
